Class Description: State-of-the-art astronomical techniques for observation of sources from the in-frared through optical will be covered. Topics discussed will include astronomical telescopes, instrumentation (cameras, spectrographs, interferometers), detectors (CCDs, bolometers, infrared arrays, heterodyne receivers), and noise in detec-tion systems. Depending on time and interest other special topics will be con-sidered such as active optics, new generation telescopes, cryogenic techniques, observing procedures, and data analysis. Course work will include computational exercises that may involve numerical modeling or simulation, and the use of a ray trace program to design and study optical systems.
