The Global Oscillation Network Group is a set of telescopes spread around the world that continuously observe the Sun. The purpose of this instrument is to study the internal structure of the Sun via helioseismology , just as geologists learn about the Earth via seismology, the study of earthquakes.
The 31 May 1996 issue of Science magazine is devoted to reports from the first months of operation of the GONG.
