SpectroCam-10 and the Impacts of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter

The Impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with Jupiter

In July 1994, we used SpectroCam-10 to image the collisions of several comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragments with Jupiter. Here are some of our results.

The first image is a sequence of frames showing the impact of the R fragment which occurred on 21 July 1994. At a wavelength of 4.5 microns, we saw two faint "precursor" flashes at 5:34:52 and 5:35:48 UT (top row) before the main intensity peak at 5:45:04 (bottom row). The accompanying plot shows the lightcurve derived from all the available images.

The second image shows the L event at several infrared wavelengths from a few minutes after the impact until more than a month later. The July 19-20 images shown here were the only images we got through short breaks in a thick deck of clouds. You can imagine our frustration...
