Undergraduate Opportunities

The New York Space Grant (NYSG) Consortium supports undergraduate research opportunities in space-related fields with various programs. Each year, undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in research during the summer and/or throughout the year in on-going projects sponsored by NASA

Under the guidance of leading experts in their fields, undergraduates conduct research in a variety of science and engineering disciplines. The following programs are accepting applications:

Internships at NASA centers

The One Stop Shopping Initiative (OSSI): Student Online Application for Recruiting Interns, Fellows, and Scholar (SOLAR) is "a NASA-wide system for the recruitment, application, selection and career development of undergraduate and graduate students primarily in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Opportunities for students in other disciplines are available." Using the SOLAR web site, a student can search and apply for multiple NASA opportunities using a single application.

Eligibility:
Contingent upon funding from NASA, the New York Space Grant Consortium is one of the many organizations that anticipates funding undergraduate students for NASA summer 2012 internships. To be eligible for NY Space Grant funding, a full-time student must (1) be a United States citizen, and (2) be a New York state resident or attend a New York college/university, and (3) be majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) discipline. Additional eligibility requirements exist for each specific internship opportunity. Females and students from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

NASA Academy Summer Programs

NASA Academy is an intense summer experience for undergraduate and graduate students to hone their leadership and technical skills in science and engineering. Besides conducting individual research and group projects, Academy students attend seminars and travel to various site visits.

Multiple NASA Academies will be held at Ames Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center, Glenn Research Center, Goddard Space Flight Center, Langley Research Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center.

Eligibility:
Contingent upon funding from NASA, the New York Space Grant Consortium is one of the many organizations that anticipates funding students for NASA Academy summer 2012 positions. To be eligible for NY Space Grant funding, a full-time student must (1) be a United States citizen, and (2) be a New York state resident or attend a New York college/university, and (3) be majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) discipline. Additional eligibility requirements exist for each specific internship opportunity. Females and students from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

NASA Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program

The Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program is managed for NASA by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) under the auspices of the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA). The LARSS Program provides paid internships for students to gain exciting hands-on research experience while working side-by-side with NASA's finest scientists and engineers who serve as mentors at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC).

Summer 2012 NYSG Internship at Honeybee Robotics Spacecraft Mechanisms Corp.

NY Space Grant is partnering with Honeybee Robotics Spacecraft Mechanisms Corporation to co-sponsor a summer 2012 internship position. This paid internship will provide a unique experience for a student to work on cutting-edge technology crucial to space exploration, such as advanced robotic and spacecraft systems. The selected intern will engage in hands-on engineering projects with a mentor at Honeybee's facility in New York City (Manhattan).

Eligibility:
To be eligible for this opportunity at Honeybee Robotics, a student must

  1. be a United States citizen,
  2. be a full-time undergraduate or master's student at a NY Space Grant institution (see list at the right side of this page),
  3. be majoring in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, enrolled in a master's program or completing undergraduate junior or senior year by summer 2012,
  4. have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale).
Underrepresented minority and female engineering students are encouraged to apply.

Summer 2012 NYSG Internships at Moog Space and Defense Group

NY Space Grant is partnering with Moog Inc.'s Space and Defense Group to co-sponsor several summer 2012 engineering internship positions. Interns will support design, analysis, development, and qualification tests for space vehicle propulsion and actuation projects at Moog's facility in East Aurora, NY.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for this opportunity at Moog Space and Defense Group, a student must

  1. be a United States citizen,
  2. be a full-time student at a NY Space Grant institution (see list at the right side of this page), completing junior or senior year or enrolled in a master's program by summer 2012,
  3. be majoring in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or systems engineering, and
  4. have a minimum GPA of 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
Underrepresented minority and female engineering students are encouraged to apply.

Summer 2012 Internships at Crestron Electronics
